Identifying opportunities for growth is critical to all businesses, and especially so in such an integral industry as shipping. Staying ahead of the innovation curve is key to this development, with the digitalisation of the maritime sector at the core of these changing landscape.

With this in mind, Digital Ship is pleased to be heading to the shores of the Mediterranean, to the famous maritime city of Marseille, for our first Maritime CIO Forum Med, where the focus is on how to harness these opportunities, and how to address the challenges and questions all these advances in technology are posing to our industry.

Through the four key sessions, we will ask how the industry is responding to change and investigate what technology and digital transformation can do for us.

Katerina RaptakiKaterina Raptaki is the IT Manager of Navios Group of companies, including 4 NYSE-listed companies, with branches in cities all over the world, owning and managing more than 150 vessels. Katerina is also the former president of AMMITEC, the Association of IT Managers in Shipping. She graduated from the National Technical University of Athens with a degree in Naval / Mechanical Engineering and has 28-years’ experience in IT and Communications. With more than 16 years of experience in Shipping, having deep knowledge in Marine Satellite systems, vast experience in shipping software and Project Management, Katerina has been holding Managerial positions in various companies allowing her to have a full understanding of technical issues and operational procedures. Her excellent people management skills include the ability to transfer her expertise in technical systems delivery, business analysis and the management of cross-functional business projects and project teams.

Barbara Bersani, Head of Sales ESMEA, Marlink

Barbara BersaniBarbara Bersani has more than 10 years of experience in the satellite communications sector working for Marlink, Vizada and now Airbus Defence and Space. She joined Marlink as a Sales Manager for the sales regions in France, Monaco, and Switzerland in 2005. In 2008 she took responsibility for Maritime Sales for Europe West and Europe East. In 2012 Barbara was appointed as Head of Sales Maritime for Continental Europe, Middle East and Africa. Earlier in her career, she held Business Development and Marketing positions within the Defence Industry. Barbara holds a BA from The Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies of Geneva and a DBA from the LSE – London School of Economics.

Eric Hoogenbosch, Director of Retail, Inmarsat Maritime

Eric HoogenboschEric Hoogenbosch has over 20 years' experience in the telecommunications and satellite industry. After starting his career in international data network services and moving to fixed satellite services, he entered the mobile satellite industry in 2003. Currently he is responsible for the retail sales activities for the EMEA region within the Maritime business unit at Inmarsat.

He is very excited to be part of the introduction of Fleet Xpress, a revolutionary new service that will bring a new level of connectivity services to the maritime industry.

Giampiero Soncini, Director, Volaris Marine Division

Giampiero SonciniGiampiero Soncini started his maritime career in 1971 by joining the Italian Navy. Promoted officer in 1972, he then graduated in Electrical Engineering at Pisa University with the second ever thesis in Italy on Optical Fibers, in 1979. From 1979 to 1985 he was involved in the construction of the “Maestrale” Class Frigates, the first Navy ships in the world to have a fully computerized Machinery Control Room. He served on one of the vessels as Chief Engineer/Electrical. In 1986 he left the Italian Navy to join NATO Undersea Research Centre, dedicated to Anti-Submarine Warfare. He was involved in the construction of RV Alliance, nicknamed “the ship of silence”, at the time the most advanced and quietest ship ever built, and the first one in the world to have a commercial GPS and a fully Integrated Navigation System.

In 1989 Mr. Soncini became responsible for the technical management of the vessel, until 1998, when he resigned from NATO to become the Managing Director of SpecTec Italy. Between 1998 and 2005 he opened or managed several South European offices, as VP South Europe; he later became VP Sales worldwide. In 2005 he became CEO of the SpecTec Group. From 2005 to 2012, he managed the Group growth from 9 offices and 135 employees, to 26 offices in 19 countries and over 330 employees. In 2011 he received a Honoris Cause degree in Public Administration by the US Massachusetts Maritime University. In 2012, Volaris Group of Canada bought SpecTec Group. In 2016, Volaris decided to further invest in the Marine IT business and created a new Marine Division, with Mr. Soncini as Managing Director.

Geoffroy Stern, Senior Consultant, Euroconsult

Geoffroy SternGeoffroy Stern is a Senior Consultant of Euroconsult based in Paris, France, with expertise in economic, strategic and financial analysis, with a particular focus on due diligence assessments for project financing and M&A transactions in the satellite communication sector.

Prior to joining Euroconsult, Geoffroy has had ten years of experience as equity analyst and research manager in the brokerage industry.

In addition to his current activity on the satellite communication, Geoffroy has a strong expertise in the oil & gas sector in and outside Europe, which he developed as part of his previous positions. This involved the management of a team of analysts, the direct coverage of 13 stocks and the management of 50 priority customers in Europe and the United States.  

He holds a Diploma from Business Management School Audencia in France with a specialization in Finance.

Ulf Siwe, Communications Officer - STM Validation Project, Swedish Maritime Administration

Ulf SiweSTM Validation is an EU-project more than 50 partners in 13 countries and budget of 43M euro.

Mr. Ulf Siwe M.Sc. is the Communications Officer of the project. The project is validating the Sea Traffic Management concept on 300 ships and in 13 ports, testing real-time information sharing to authorized relevant parties in the maritime transport chain. Ulf is the author of scientific papers in the field and an appreciated presenter at conferences.

Manuel ValeroManuel Valero has a Bachelor of Telecommunications Engineering and holds a Masters in Satellite Communications from the Universidad Politecnica de Madrid, Spain.

As Telenor Satellite’s Sales Manager for Maritime, he has been able to highly develop the Telenor Satellite customer database by closely supporting our maritime customers with their ever-increasing requirements.

Prior to joining Telenor Satellite, he worked for Global IP (acquired by EMC) as a Business Development Manager in the period 2009/2012, and has more than 15 years of experience in the international satellite industry.

With the successful launch of THOR 7, Telenor Satellite is looking forward to offering Ka-band satellite capacity for offshore services in coverage areas spanning the North Sea, Norwegian Sea, the Red Sea, the Baltic Sea, the Persian Gulf and the Mediterranean. We are already welcoming many new customers to our 1º West home and have seen incredible growth within the offshore sector for satellite broadband solutions in Europe and the Middle East.

Antoine has a Networks & Telecom engineering academic background from EPITA in Paris, one of the most reputed schools of Computer Science in France.

Prior to joining Marlink, Antoine started his career as Network Expert for business-critical financial markets, then he occupied various positions in the field of Unified Communications software.

Antoine joined Marlink in 2011. With 15 years’ of diverse experience in Telecommunications and with his strong knowledge in IT and data communications, Antoine is able to offer valuable advice and support and as part of the EMEA Sales team, helps ship owners to optimise vessel operations and enable the digital vessels of tomorrow.

Julián Seseña Navarro, Presidente, Holistic Innovation Institute

Julián Seseña NavarroJulian Seseña has a Ph. degree on Radiocommunications, Master in Communications Systems and Networks, Business Degree on General Management and, among others, Yacht Captain.

He has served as Executive Director of North American Teledesic Communications Spain, Director of Telecommunications in Spanish satellite operator Hispasat, Head of Research and Development in the Spanish General Direction of Telecommunications (Ministry of Industry and Telecommunications) and cooperated with the Spanish Association Internautas on security affairs. He has participated in the European Commission research programme for Secure Societies (E SPONDER project).
